William Morgetson Wall Art

William Margetson (Born 1861 – Died 1940) was an English illustrator and painter based in London. He also worked a lot as a book illustrator. He was married to Helen Hatton who was also an artist. He met Helen during a joint illustration assignment. The couple supported each other with their art and was able to produce stunning pieces. Margetson’s art has found its way into many buildings all over the world, and today they can be seen hanging on many walls. He made many allegorical and religious works, but is best remembered for his aesthetic women’s portraits. Margetson first studied at Dulwich College and later at the South Kensington Schools and the Royal Academy Schools. After his graduation, he was given the opportunity to exhibit at the Royal Academy which threw him into the limelight.

Since then, he exhibited in many other places including the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the Royal Society of British Artists, and at the Grosvenor Gallery. Like most of his contemporary painters and portraitists of the lesser genre, the artist surrendered to the potent strain of Victorian classicism. He was influenced by renowned contemporaries such as Poynter and Leighton. Initially, he worked at a university, using the Victorian style and made a name as a portraitist of beautiful women which sold in large numbers. Later, he used a more freehand brushwork as his art got influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites and post-impressionism. His painting of a portrait of Tennyson Alfred currently hangs in the National Portrait Gallery in London.
