John Leone Wall Art

John Leone (1929 – 2011) gained his formal art training at the School of Art and Design in New York City. He finished his formal training at Cooper Union Art Institute, and upon graduation, he became a freelance illustrator. His love of the outdoors and horses permeated his works right from the beginning. As his recognition grew in the industry, his fine art painting wee featured as book covers for adventures and Western novels for such renowned publisher as Grossett & Dulap and Simon & Schuster. Leone’s interest in horses began in 1940s when he made a trip to Texas to visit his sister and brother-in-law on their ranch. Since then, he was captivated with horses. He lived in Catskill Mountains of upstate New York where he was raising and training Quarter Horses together with his wife. Leone spent long hours in his studio creating the art which was his livelihood.
He also honed his riding and driving skills, which allowed him to enter horse shows and hunter-paced events. Knowing that he couldn’t keep a landscape from changing light, or a horse standing still, he found photography a useful tool. He composed his paintings from the images of the world around him. He lived close to the actual foxhunting country of upstate New York. When it snowed, he used to go out to capture the scenes that would later form the background for his paintings. When beginning a painting, he would draw a very extensive actual size pencil rendering on parchment, and then, he would transfer the drawing onto a toned canvas or panel using a carbon paper. He would then work on the shadows and the background, and finally on the foreground.
